Cropping – Collaboration across the Limestone Coast to enhance innovation and profitability

How are we going to get beyond what we have always done?
What is over the horizon for cropping? What is going to affect returns from cropping into the future?
(Climate, technology, larger farms, different economies, foreign ownership, soil carbon, free trade??????)
MFMG know that there is considerable potential to be realised by small groups working more collaboratively across the region.
As part of the Cluster project, we would aim to:
- develop a better understanding of the current cropping industry and the opportunities that exist, through new and innovative crops.
- continue to engage those involved in the cropping sector to build knowledge and understanding of best practice production and innovative thinking,
- help break down the barriers to effective communication between the small grower groups and the wider limestone coast industry
- identify inefficiencies and common problems across the production system and build on projects such as the” NEW HORIZONS PROJECT” outcomes
- encourage understanding of the economic benefit of a collaborative approach
This process will be achieved by:
- working with small group members to develop new ways of thinking and understanding to identify production and marketing issues, including those related to collaboration
- collaborating with government and industry bodies to understand the current markets for products as well as future new markets for current and possibly new cropping commodities
- continue to actively engage the cropping industry with the aim of expanding the groups and making them relevant and sustainable into the future, as growers begin to see the relevance of being involved in the regional groups
- providing administration and communications support to ensure that the volunteer grower led groups will have a collaborative approach in a timely and effective manner
Through this collaboration we would expect to see a regional industry that has learnt to investigate markets, innovate and value add products that come from increased production, leading to supporting workforce growth and ultimately and industry that is sustainable in a changing economic climate.
